Create Autodesk Civil 3D Projects Faster With Automatic Grading

Kevin Spear

Grading Optimization, an interactive tool included in Civil 3D versions 2024 and later*, facilitates grading for land areas based on established design criteria. It uses generative design and optimization algorithms to establish and evaluate land development solutions according to specified design criteria.

What is Generative Design?

Generative Design is an advanced, iterative design exploration process that uses an algorithm-driven AI program to generate a range of design solutions that meet a set of constraints set by engineers.

Generative Design:

  • Isn’t an “easy button,” but it’s close!
  • Does not replace the designer or engineer
  • Does require engineering input, review, and analysis

What Challenges Does Grading Optimization Help Overcome?

Grading is a time-consuming element of the design process, and results are often undesirable. Design requirements frequently change throughout the project lifecycle, and revisions often lead to starting over, resulting in cost overruns and delays.

With Grading Optimization, you can:

  • Reduce the time the grading process takes
  • Generate multiple options for consideration
  • Optimize your designs directly in Civil 3D

Watch the recording below of “Create Autodesk Civil 3D Projects Faster with Automatic Grading” for a full demonstration of Grading Optimization in Civil 3D, and to learn how easily you can implement the tool in your workflows for improved project outcomes.

*At the time of this recording, Grading optimization was not included with your Civil 3D subscriptions. This tool is now available to all Civil 3D users with versions 2024 or newer. Those using versions 2023 or older can still download the program via the steps outlined in the webinar.
